Earth Hour was celebrated on 26 March at 8.30pm-9.30pm around the globe, with millions of people from 192 countries and territories taking part in this monumental event. This year, it has garnered more than 7.8 billion impressions on social media platforms, with #EarthHour and related hashtags trending on Google Search and Twitter across 35 countries!

At YTL Group, we are proud advocates of Earth Hour that raises awareness on climate change, with nature and biodiversity loss as a focal point this year. We believe that collective action, no matter how individually small, can prove to be powerful in making lasting positive impacts on the environment. With the participation of 25 business units this year, we achieved CO2 savings of approximately 398 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions, equivalent to:

Approximately 1,590km driven in a petrol-powered car, or

27,382 smartphone charges.

Besides the symbolic lights-off activity for an hour, some properties came up with additional activities:

The Majestic Malacca and YTL International College of Hospitality Management provided candlelight dinners for their hotel guests and students.

Some YTL Hotels such as The Surin Phuket and Higashiyama Niseko Village placed candles in public spaces around their hotels instead of electrical lighting.

ERL collected and donated unused clothes, whilst YTL International College of Hospitality Management collected recyclable items and donated them to Tzu Chi Foundation.

YTL Jawa Timur displayed the symbolic Earth Hour “60+” logo at Bermi Eco Park with LED lights whilst the Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur displayed the logo using candles.

Sydney Harbour Marriott Hotel prepared an exclusive dish made with organic and sustainable seafood, served in their Customs House Bar.

Melbourne Marriott Hotel staff served special canapés and drinks to guests at the hotel lobby.
