2020 was memorable for many reasons. Malaysians, in particular, will remember the time all of us were collectively deprived of 5pm outings to the neighbourhood Ramadan bazaar for the first time…ever?! It was not a fun time. Good news, however: such pain will not be known once again this year, at least to those in KL and Selangor. We shall be able to snack on those amazing greasy treats, with SOPs in place.

To remind you of why we love the Ramadan bazaar, here are some food recommendations:

1. Cucur udang/scallion prawn fritters

Here, we have a classic Ramadan bazaar staple. A generous portion of prawn, embedded in a circular bed of fried batter. What more could you ask for? This writer is dreaming of one as we speak.

2. Murtabak

Want something more filling than a roti canai, and yet, just as satisfying, if not more? This folded pancake with a spiced meat-and-onion filling should do the trick, after a long day.

3. Sirap bandung

Sirap bandung (which does not, contrary to popular belief, originate from Bandung, Indonesia) is a must have. A blend of evaporated milk and rose syrup, it is a smooth, creamy delight topped with ice.

4. Kuih

It is not a Ramadan bazaar without a kuih store offering familiar local kuihs — talam, jelly kuih, onde-onde and kuih lapis are those you cannot miss. However, we recommend kuih keria for that perfect balance between sweet and savoury. If you are looking on the more savoury side of things, don’t forget fried snacks such as curry puffs and samosas.

As we would love to help you navigate your way through a bazaar safely, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
