YTL Group has been a long-standing supporter of Earth Hour, the global movement usually held on the last Saturday of every March to raise awareness about climate change, and this year was no different. Our people from various sectors and countries observed Earth Hour in their own way, and the lights-off event remained the central activity that took place in all participating business units.

Globally, over 414,000* people from 187* countries and territories pledged an hour on the Saturday to doing something positive for Earth, including reconnecting with the planet, restoring balance on the planet, learning more about the planet, inspiring others to take care for the planet, and finding other ways to make an impact. This was all done to create the #BiggestHourForEarth, to remind us that we have the collective power to do something significant in the fight against climate change.

This year, we had more business units involved in the iconic lights-off activity. Some took further steps by organising more activities for their internal staff and external stakeholders, such as candle-lighting, hosting donation drives, running recycling campaigns and educational events, plus engaging guests in the hotels and resorts, to name a few. Find out more about what our business units had planned for Earth Hour here.

As a Group, we avoided a total of 340 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions during Earth Hour! If you need an idea on how much that is, think of it as:

carbon dioxide absorbed by 15 mature trees in a year (a mature hardwood tree can absorb roughly 22 kgCO2/yr)

carbon dioxide released over 1,403 kilometres powered by an internal combustion engine powered passenger vehicle

The numbers now may not seem significant, but imagine if we turned off unnecessary lighting for an hour every day. This would avoid 124 tonnes of CO2 a year, and you can do the math for the rest.
