She has successfully established a robust business model for venturing into the independent management of retail brands. Her exemplary leadership during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis ensured a sustainable cash flow programme. She was able to ensure the success and survival of her portfolio's subsidiaries, even in the face of challenges within the retail industry. Her unwavering work ethic, dynamism and “never say die” attitude serve as a strong example for those around her.
Shahrizan bin Shahron
If you’re in the office during the weekends, chances are high for you to bump into our next winner, Shahrizan bin Shahron. He consistently goes above and beyond, working tirelessly as a Contracts Manager to ensure that his work surpasses the highest standards. Shahrizan’s sense of responsibility and accountability are traits that make him stand out as a leader. His sense of teamwork and camraderie shine through when he willingly assists his colleagues and provides them with guidance. Known as the go-to person for getting things done, Melisa Ann Sellvadurai handles a myriad of tasks, from organising events and interviews to finding old photos, updating website content and producing videos. With over 15 years of invaluable experience, she can always be relied upon to offer critical opinions on creative decisions and give a different perspective on a project when all other ideas have been rejected. Health, Safety and Environment Department
The HSE Department of YTL Construction has consistently showcased professionalism and a winning attitude by going the extra mile to achieve tremendous success. In 2014, the team was initially established. However, a significant milestone occurred when the company secured the Gemas-JB Electrified Double Track Project in Johor, prompting the unit's upgrade to a full-fledged department under the guidance of the Project Director Infra. Under the leadership of our previous BTRT Awards Winner, Ruslan Anwar, the HSE Department set the standard for unparalleled safety and efficiency in the industry. Logging an impressive 22 million Safe Man Hours for the Gemas to JB project further exemplifies their commitment to excellence.

Ruslan Anwar Mohd Saleh
Ruslan Anwar Mohd Saleh is described as a firm favourite with the Bosses. Ever knowledgeable, responsible and humble despite holding a high position himself, he makes himself available to everyone by sharing his experience and passing down his expertise to his subordinates. Known for being hands-on and admired for his out-of-box thinking, Ruslan is also pursuing his PhD to further improve his skills. He continues to inspire all of us with his dedication and commitment to continuous learning and upskilling.
Chan Oi Li
Chan Oi Li is an incredibly inspiring individual from YTL Corporation who has made quite an impression on her nominator. She provided help and inspired her nominators to assimilate into the corporate world after they had completed their undergraduate studies. She works diligently and always delivers her work on time and with minimal error possible. She would own up and apologise for a mistake, whether big or small, and never fails to find solutions to a problem. When she is around, everyone is well taken care of equally. Her generosity, kindness and optimism in every situation is something everyone should strive to achieve.
Bernard Leong
Bernard Leong has been described as the embodiment of the BTRT values by a millennial. He works hard, putting in extra hours even during weekends, to make sure that his work is up to his rigorous standards. Always taking full ownership of his work, he is a great team player and is always helpful to colleagues who need assistance. He shows humility, honesty and transparency in all that he does. Bernard is always open to new methods of working and brings new perspectives to the way he presents his work. Already hailed as a great mentor at a young age, he never backs down in finding solutions for issues faced at work.
Woon Wei Li
Woon Wei Li is a very hard worker and is often the last one to leave the office. Her job requires her to market and meet prospective Mall tenants which she does so excellently. She believes in her responsibility to pursue positive change for the good of the company, protects the company’s interest while also being ethical in her dealings with tenants. Her dedication goes beyond, as she would carry her business cards to other shopping malls, and uses them when trying to convince cool tenants to move to Lot 10 or Starhill. She can often be found in Lot 10 with her family in tow, even during the weekends to help contribute to foot traffic and to support the shops in YTL malls.
YTL Learning Academy
The YTL Learning Academy is the only team so far in the history of the BTRT Awards to have received numerous nominations from several different companies! Having started only during the pandemic, the YTL Learning Academy was just doing their job to ramp up learning programmes. The numerous nominations it received shows the impact it had in making the lockdown more bearable, as employees were still able to learn and experience personal growth through the team’s initiatives. Many nominators also mentioned how the learning experience was pleasant and very relatable to their daily life – living up to the award’s name of Building the Right Thing for YTL as a whole.

Ho Chee Ming is known as a ray of sunshine, greeting people in the office with a big smile and even free breakfast. He has been described as one of the friendliest, warmest and most optimistic people that you will meet in Menara YTL. His humility and perseverance in mastering new technology in his field inspires those in his team to keep upskilling themselves as well.
Usharani A/P Sundarajoo
Usharani A/P Sundarajoo is always looking for ways she can help others. She donated to the poor community in her home state, contributed towards better equipment for teachers to teach online and even helped with to facilitate physical and online training sessions.
Tan Siew Ling
Siew Ling has been called the Google and WIkipedia of her team’s project all rolled into one. When MCO happened and her company needed speedy approvals to continue working, she found a way to compile all the documentation needed in a short amount of time despite having limited internet access! This superwoman tracks milestones and makes sure that deadlines are met.
Azman Mustaffa
“Always silently fighting for YTL’s cause” is how our next winner has been described. Azman's sincere and honest speech, willingness to drive to a meeting even if it is across the country, and wisdom in handling external parties has made it possible for YTL to win many cases. Sadly, earlier this year, he passed away from COVID-19. But his contribution, legacy and impact will never be forgotten.
W@Y Team (Women at YTL)
The W@Y team consists of a group of volunteers from many different departments and backgrounds. They carve time outside of their day job to organise helpful talks for the YTL Group. From parenting to finances to mental health, their events have created a platform for people to voice out their struggles, both personal and professional, find assurance that they aren’t facing their fears alone and share wisdom on how they turn those obstacles into opportunities for growth to reach their full potential.

Wong Chung Kiat
After a particular night’s heavy rain, Wong Chung Kiat took the initiative to inspect the Gemas-Johor Bahru railway site on a Sunday morning, the only day he is off duty, just in case. His intuition to act on his instinct led him to discover loosened gravel, which could have caused a train wreck! His sense of moral responsibility & hard work prevented a tragedy from happening. Essentially, he saved lives.
Caren Tham Wan See
Expectations set are high as Caren handles sensitive data for the entire YTL Group. She manages 41 of the Group’s websites & applications, develops systems for business units, & provides solutions for clients from all over. She sometimes works during public holidays with no complaint which makes her extremely reliable to her team & clients. In the 10 years she’s been at YTL, she consistently exudes joy & positivity to the people around her & truly exemplifies the YTL values of togetherness, hard work & vitality.
Sie Sook Chin
Sook Chin frequently gets a lunch group together to build a sense of community in the workplace. The positive attitude she brings to work every day impacts the atmosphere & affects the people around her. She is always the first one in & the last one to leave the office. Her small actions make a big difference such as keeping spare umbrellas for when people need them, preparing packed lunches for meetings, making sure sanitisers & bacterial wipes are available for everyone to use, just to name a few. The fact that she’s been in YTL for almost 30 years & still has the willingness to develop herself shows the kind of character we have come to expect in a BTRT Award Winner.
Tika Bahadur Lumre
Working in YTL Hotels since 2005, Tika has really risen through the ranks with hard work & diligence at the Ritz-Carlton & JW Marriott Hotel, KL. During the pandemic, with minimal manpower, he supervised & trained a housekeeping army to adapt swiftly to the several drastic changes in safety procedures. Tika does all of this with a smile while embracing the need to be a brand ambassador of the hotels & by also being an exemplary leader to his team. He is truly the embodiment of our YTL spirit of vitality!
Learn From Home Volunteers
Due to its unexpected beginning, the LFH project demanded the combination of such a vast array of expertise that no single department alone would have been able to handle at the time and speed needed. So FrogAsia sent out cries of help to various YTL subsidiaries, and the response was overwhelming. Volunteers sacrificed countless weekday nights & weekends to ensure that every part of the project - designs, copy, branding, website development, lesson plans, vetting applications, handling enquiries, and verifying postal addresses, just to name a few - was completed to the best of their abilities. Thanks to their combined dedication & commitment, a project that would have taken more than a year to carry out was completed in less than half the time.

Alex Ho Chee Fuang
Alex Ho is a man of many names. He is known among his team as “The Saint” - no matter how tight the deadline, he remains calm & patient as he guides his team. He is their “Walking Dictionary” of accounting standards, always willing to provide useful advice and ideas to colleagues. At times, he is also the “Handyman” who fixes broken chairs. Last, but certainly not least, he was a “Guardian Angel” to his colleague who was trapped in a lift - when he saw her on CCTV, he Whatsapped her for 30 minutes just to ensure that she wouldn’t panic. It is no surprise that he was nominated several times by his peers for the acclaimed BTRT award, and won.
Catherine Yap
Tried, tested, and true - that’s Catherine Yap. She has been with the YTL Group through recessions and salary freezes; yet through it all, has remained jovial, dedicated, hardworking and loyal. She is Miss Efficiency, always making suggestions about how we can improve systems. Her extreme dependability is evidenced by the fact that on top of her day job, she organises a lot for the leadership conference every year! If you need a flight to get there or a hotel room to stay in, she arranges it all. It’s not difficult to see why she is so highly respected among everyone she works with.
Roslee bin Haron
Talk about going beyond the call of duty: Roslee bin Haron will work with the general workers to fix any defects that arise, even if it is late at night! To ensure that materials make it to batch concrete on time, he doesn’t mind using his own car to transport them. He makes himself available to answer calls & reply Whatsapp messages from sub-contractors or his own engineers, even when he is feeling under the weather. Once, when he heard there was a slope collapse on site that needed his attention, he drove from Kajang all the way to Bekok, even though he had just arrived home for the weekend. (Yes, that is a lot of “even though”s!) Roslee is truly someone who gives his best, and more, for the best interest of YTL.
Jeremy Foo Yeong Chyuan
Jeremy Foo is described as a practical and ingenious problem-solver who constantly provides creative and different approaches and solutions to problems, and a compassionate leader who prioritises leadership development in his team’s weekly meetings. One time, when his team failed to achieve an internal deadline, instead of singling out people to blame, he took the responsibility of not doing a good enough job of communicating and guiding the team. This vulnerability and understanding (that a leader always has room to grow) has earned him the respect of his entire team, and inspired them to take responsibility, and continuously learn and improve.
Stakeholder & Strategic Communications Department
The SPYTL Stakeholder and Strategic Communications Department consists of people from different backgrounds and designations. They have proactively engaged the Johor community on behalf of the SIPP-YTL Gemas-JB Electrified Double Rail Project by organising educational talks in rural areas, and collaborated with Legoland Malaysia to engage students. During festive seasons (which are usually public holidays), they actively visit orphanages and old folks homes, bearing gifts and making sure that each person there feels celebrated.

Felix Rabindranath Paul
As an Event Technical Manager, his ultimate goal is to provide the best customer experience, and he does so with a no-nonsense attitude and absolute meticulousness! Even when he was involved in a hit-and-run accident and had a concussion, he made his wife drive him back to the hotel to check on an event to ensure everything was in order. With all his hard work and dedication, it's no wonder the Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur is always bustling with events!
Pang Teng Wah
She’s an exemplary leader who exhibits the highest level of commitment and dedication. At the office, she’s almost always the first one to clock in at 7:30 am. On top of that, she doesn’t mind replying to work emails till as late as 3 am! As a lawyer, she protects the company’s interests and its stakeholder relationships with her creative contracts and strong attention to detail. But that’s not all! As a colleague, she never fails to make her team feel at ease, and always goes the extra mile to brighten up someone’s day.
Wan Mofrira Wan Mohamad
He lives by the principle ‘honesty is the best policy’ in every aspect of his work. He always empowers his team to work efficiently and also encourages them to be generous with lending a helping hand. As a leader who leads by example, he walked the talk when he voluntarily assisted Lot 10 Hutong in attaining the DBKL business and liquor licenses at absolutely no extra cost!
Darren Mario Santa Maria @ Sta Maria
He is a true champion of our Brand Values. As ‘Mr. Congeniality’, he makes himself approachable to his colleagues, who find solace in approaching him for advice (even on HR matters!). He always empowers people to reach their full potential at work and outside of work. At ERLSB and E-MAS, he helps the team improve their problem-solving skills via Design Thinking workshops, of which he also facilitated at the YTL Leadership Conference 2017.
Family Day 2017 Committee
The committee, comprising of various departments and micro teams within SPYTL, went all-out to organise the YTL Construction Family Day in just a month and a half. The first of its kind, the charity event was attended by 3,000 staff. All members within the committee made selfless contributions and showed admirable work ethics throughout the event’s planning phase. Some even went the extra mile by using their free time, rest time and mealtimes to continue working. The committee did it all, from manning retail booths that sold mostly handmade items for charity, to designing stages, to custom building games and prizes to suit the demographics of the attendees, and even to converting the historic Sentul Railway Depot (untouched at the time) into an event accessible for the elderly, young adults and children. It is no wonder the event was a total success!
BTRT Awards 2017 Winners
Mohd Faizal M. Ramlee
He is well liked and dependable among his peers. The winner has also gone beyond the call of duty multiple times when it comes to locating the owner of Lost & Found items. Since 2014, Faizal has perfect punctuality attendance record and has no medical leave recorded. Due to his work performance, Faizal was recently promoted as Ticketing Supervisor in 2016. Apart from his daily routine work, this winner is also a regular when it comes to volunteering for CSR events such as YTL Foundation’s Frog Classroom Makeover and BTRT Town Halls, just to name a few.
Lee Lai Peng
Lee Lai Peng is highly dedicated to work and willingly sacrifices her time to lead her team. Her work in YTL Digital has allowed the team to grow their business footprints in an extremely short time. All this comes at a cost. She was willing to shift from state-to-state, often travelling back to KL for meetings, just to gain success for her team. In order for her team to perform better, she also came up with her own motivation module sales topic. Personally, she has trained and developed a 350 plus strong team.
Ahmad Mokhtar Bin Mohamad (Captain Mokh)
Captain Mokh is described as a man with a pleasant disposition. He consistently exemplifies his sense of moral responsibility through the many programmes and activities he has helped develop such as Marang River Cruise and the Chemerung Waterfall excursions. While his optimism is evident when interacting with guests, it is when he’s helping fellow colleagues where he truly shines as a hardworking team player. He recently drove all the way to Cameron Highlands Resort just to share his knowledge and assist a colleague in her upcoming project.
Amy Chong May Leng
Amy’s natural instinct to help other people flows into the workplace as well. Everyone loves working with Amy as she exudes positive energy that motivates and encourages. She takes on a lot onto her shoulders with a smile. In spite of having lots to do as a Center Manager, she’s often happy to lend a helping hand, even once offering to drive a van to pick up children to bring them to an education center. You can trust her with everything, knowing that she will not let you down.
Team
In the spirit of togetherness, Frog Asia has launched “Interest Clubs”. The concept builds upon the idea to gather people with similar interests to run activities of their choice. These interest groups include clubs for Music, Badminton, Muay Thai, Cooking and much more. This has definitely built stronger relationships between colleagues and created a more appealing work environment.

Mohan Perumal
Mohan Perumal is the Senior General Manager for Pahang Cement, one of the most efficient and best-performing cement plants in Malaysia. It takes decisive decision-making and hard work to get multiple external parties to coordinate and unite successfully to accomplish a mission! When a workers’ temporary housing complex caught fire and burnt to the ground, Mohan and his management immediately went to the affected area, kept workers from entering the site and called the fire department. They distributed 50 t-shirts, 20 pillows, mattresses and towels, and organised a donation drive among the Pahang Cement staff for clothing and bedding. They even prepared 3 days of free food and drinks for the affected workers.
Justin Juhun
Justin Juhun has a great passion for animals and his tireless effort to preserve all the forest’s animals and land. He nurses injured animals back to health and although he would like to keep them close at the Gaya Island Resort where he works, he releases them back into the wild where they belong. It takes courage and perseverance to believe that they will continue to live well. Justine works so much with Proboscis monkeys that they’ve grown fond of him too and come out to see him when he’s around. He also educates visitors on the animals and the need to preserve their ecosystem. To Justin, his work is not only a job, he believes that all living beings should equally share this place that we call home.
Roslita Aida Rahim
On top of taking care of her parents (one of which has cancer), Roslita Aida Rahim was also single-parenting 4 children until her recent remarriage. Yet, she doesn’t let those personal challenges stop her from going the extra mile for YTL’s Customer Experience Department. Once, she worked non-stop seven days a week, preparing the first ever sales manual from scratch for all 300+ Yes Stores. Then she travelled alone from state to state conducting LTE launch and Friendly User Trial training until the eve of Raya to ensure that all the staff were ready. Roslita is the embodiment of YTL Communications’ core brand values of hard work and vitality to never say No to YES. She also turned around YES Store retail sales and service methodology and championed the 1Bestarinet ambassador program to promote the adoption of Chromebook and Frog VLE across 2,008 schools across the country.
Architectural Team
YTL Construction’s Architectural Team was asked to help YTL Foundation’s non-profit project to extend and renovate the United Learning Centre (ULC), a refugee centre for Myanmar children off Jalan Imbi. The team saw it as a life-giving project and enthusiastically agreed. They wanted to do more than just improve living conditions at ULC so in line with the true spirit of Raya, they organised a Hari Raya celebration for these children. They didn’t just provide an appetising feast (eating only after the children had their fill!), some also personally contributed the children’s most dire needs like school stationery and toiletries. They also planned games and drawing activities, and surprised the children with little green packets and poppers! The team really lived out YTL’s core value of moral responsibility of giving back to the community.
Operations Team Drivers Group
As train operators, hard work is synonymous with the job - some go to the depot at 4am to start the first train service for the earliest passengers, 365 days a year! Their Lost and Found place prime importance on honesty - when they found a passport, wallet containing RM1350, and Lenovo laptop, they took every effort to find its rightful owner. As a result, they have received commendations from many grateful passengers. They must follow a very strict duty roster! But they always stay united - whenever a team member is not feeling well, they fill in for each other, ensuring seamless on-time train service performance. The team fulfils their jobs with vitality, energy and enthusiasm because they know that passengers are relying on them to get to their destinations safely.
