YTL-International College of Hotel Management (YTL-ICHM) is committed to cultivating excellence in aspiring professionals through a comprehensive education in the hospitality industry. In their ongoing dedication to both education and sustainability, the college hosted an Earth Hour event on campus. This initiative not only underscores their mission to nurture talent but also reflects their proactive stance in fostering a sustainable future for the hospitality sector and beyond.

YTL Sustainability Talk about Earth Hour during the event

To impart knowledge about Earth Hour to their new batch of students, the YTL-ICHM invited the YTL Sustainability team to give a talk at their Earth Hour event, scheduled on 21st March  2024, at the YTL Plaza. The event was attended by 15 students and five lecturers.

The talk commenced with an introduction to Earth Hour, a global initiative organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) that encourages people to switch off their lights and support environmental causes. Following this introduction, the YTL Sustainability team provided insights into the impacts of climate change on the planet and its many inhabitants. The team shared case studies illustrating how these impacts affect various sectors, in particular hospitality. An example of such a case study is the flash floods that occurred in Malaysia in 2022. The floods caused power outages in several areas, affecting many hotel services.

Following the section on climate change impacts, the YTL Sustainability team proceeded to suggest actions that hotels can take to help mitigate these effects. Some of the recommendations include implementing recycling bins, managing food responsibly to reduce food waste, installing climate-resilient features such as energy-efficient lighting and solar panels, and more. Additionally, they offer guidance on actions individuals can take to contribute such as volunteering in conservation programmes, connecting with nature and researching environmental issues. To conclude the talk, the audience engaged in a brief Kahoot quiz to assess their understanding of the topics covered.
