The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is a worldwide environmental initiative that aims to address the pressing issue of coastal and marine pollution. It is estimated that 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic have been dumped into our oceans and that 15% of that number will end up on beaches. Organised annually on 16th September, this initiative brings together volunteers from various communities to participate in cleaning up beaches, shorelines, and waterways.

Ways To Get Involved

This vital movement not only helps preserve the natural beauty of our coastal environments but also has far-reaching impacts on marine ecosystems, safeguarding the health of our oceans for future generations. There are many ways that you could help and together we can all make a difference:

Volunteer to Beach Clean-Up

16th Sept is a great opportunity to book a trip to the beach to not only relax, but to lend a hand for clean-up activities and to do your part in protecting the environment. It is also a good time to educate young kids on the importance of keeping coastal areas clean.

  • Reef Check Malaysia (RCM)
    • RCM is the official organiser of ICC in Malaysia.
  • Lang Tengah Turtle Watch (LTTW)
    • LTTW is organising a beach clean-up at Kuala Abang, Terengganu on 16th September 2023 at 5:00pm. Go and help them out, and if you’re interested, please contact Isandra! (+6012-504 1177) and register yourself here: 2023 ICC LTTW @ Tanjong Jara

Reduce the Usage of Plastic

It is estimated that 10 million tonnes of plastic is being dumped into the ocean every year, and if nothing changes it will only get worse. Let’s reduce plastic in our daily lives in turn helping to reduce plastic pollution in the oceans.

To aid in this YTL has an ongoing campaign called Say No To All Plastic (SNAP) with the goal of reducing the use of Single use Plastic in all of our operations. Here is a guideline to help in this endeavour: SNAP Guideline 2022.
