It was a Friday morning when I caught up with SIPPYTL’s Construction Manager Tengku Mohd Nashron bin Tengku Muhiddin and Deputy Construction Manager Mohd Faizal bin Ibrahim over a virtual call. Despite their busy schedules and numerous meetings, they generously spared their valuable time to update me on the recent developments taking place at their office in Kulai, Johor Bahru.

Tengku Nashron and Faizal are responsible for managing a department dedicated to the China Railway Gemas-Johor project, commonly known as CRGJR. Their department oversees various critical activities, including design, construction, supply, installation, completion, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of the New Electrified Double Track from Gemas to Johor Bahru. As Tengku Nashron explained, the successful completion of this significant project will enable the extension of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) Electric Train Set service from the existing KTMB Gemas Station all the way to Johor Bahru Sentral.

The gentlemen further elaborated that the project would not only enhance the quality and safety of the rail infrastructure in the southern section but also prioritise passenger comfort, service quality, and convenience. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the project will result in a 50% reduction in travel time, a 100% increase in ridership, and the development of the townships along the railway route. With a total of 11 stations and halts, 1 depot, and 25kV electrified double track spanning 194.22 km, divided into 8 Electrical Sections (ES) and Traction Power Stations, Tengku Nashron, Faizal, and their team of 60 staff have a significant responsibility on their hands.

As a department just like any other, they wear numerous hats but what exactly does a day in the life of a YTL Construction Manager look like?

“On-site, it really depends on the situation as every day looks different. Since our ‘workspace’ encompasses the existing KTMB station in Gemas all the way to Johor Bahru Sentral, we are required to be mobile within that distance. With such a vast coverage, we need to be prepared for any issues that may arise and find the best way to manage them,” said Tengku Nashron.

In 2000, he joined YTL as the Project Supervisor for the ERL project. After a break, he returned to the company in 2018, this time working in SIPPYTL’s Systems Department. Reflecting on his experience, Tengku Nashron acknowledges the challenges that come with liaising with subcontractors daily to ensure timely project completion. Nevertheless, he notes the progress made since his initial tenure, particularly in terms of enhanced office facilities as well as improved support and resources. “I’ve learned a lot about project management since taking on this role. It’s fascinating to discover the different ways projects can be planned and carried out.”

Faizal, whose YTL journey began in 2018, started out in the Systems Department and was heavily engaged in the tendering process. Over time, he has transitioned to overseeing systems designs across various departments. Tengku Nashron lightened the mood and jokingly remarked that Faizal is the embodiment of going ‘from zero to hero’, prompting both of them to share a laugh.

When asked about the exciting aspects they look forward to during their workdays, Tengku Nashron revealed his penchant for adventurous lunch breaks. ‘One of the things I enjoy about work is exploring and discovering small townships and stalls. We get the opportunity to visit many places that would otherwise remain unknown or unseen if it weren’t for this project,’ he said. Faizal, on the other hand, looks forward to being the intermediary in liaisons. ‘I enjoy interfacing, coordinating, and serving as the bridge between the Infra department and our subcontractors. Even when we encounter challenges within our Systems department and Infra faces their own set of issues, effective communication is crucial as we collaborate to meet our targeted deadlines.’

As the CRGJR project approaches its completion in 2025, the department remains fully committed to their unwavering dedication and relentless efforts to meet the targeted deadline. Thanks to the tireless work of Tengku Nashron, Faizal, and their entire department, future travelers will have the luxury to experience a seamless four-hour train journey between KL Sentral and Johor Bahru Sentral. Their contributions and hard work have played a pivotal role in shaping the successful outcome of railway commute in the country.Â
