World Environment Day
World Environment Day on the 5th June, is a significant global event that seeks to raise awareness and encourages action for the protection and preservation of our planet’s various ecosystems. Individuals, communities, organisations, and governments around the world are fostering a collective responsibility to address environmental problems by promoting sustainable practices, biodiversity conservation, and the urgent need to combat climate change. The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is Beat Plastic Pollution hosted by Cote d’lvoire in partnership with the Netherlands. It is a response to have the world unite to help solve the growing problem of Plastic Pollution.
Plastic Pollution
The world is already overwhelmed by plastic. More than 400 million tonnes of plastic products are produced every year, half of which is designed to be used only once. To add insult to injury, less than 10 percent of this is recycled. These factors may contribute heavily to Plastic Pollution which has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. The excessive production and improper disposal of plastic waste has led to an estimated 19-23 million tonnes of plastic entering oceans, landfills, and even the most remote corners of the Earth.
Not only that, what is less known is the impact of microplastics on ecosystems, biodiversity and our health. It contaminates our food, water and even the air we breathe. Over time, a large amount of microplastics in our bodies is likely to be highly carcinogenic.
YTL’s Contribution to Reduce Plastic Pollution
YTL Group acknowledges the grave issue of plastic pollution and has taken significant steps towards combating this environmental menace. With a deep commitment to sustainability, YTL launched the “Say No to All Plastic” campaign, recognising the urgent need to reduce plastic waste. The goal is to achieve zero use of avoidable Single Use Plastic (SUP) by 2025 throughout our operations.
One of the many initiatives that this campaign has initiated is the Plastic Reduction Initiative where business units across YTL Group seek to reduce their plastic footprints by practicing the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and by distributing reusable bottles and lunch boxes to employes and local communities.
