Unlike Father’s Day, Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days in many parts of the world. In many countries, Mother’s Day is typically celebrated in the month of March or May, depending on the history and set traditions for it. Here in Malaysia, we celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May.

Being a mother is one of the most exciting and exhausting jobs in the world. To all mothers out there – you may be used to putting others before you, and undeniably that is a beautiful quality. But with Mother’s Day around the corner, why don’t you put yourself back on your personal to-do lists?

By caring for yourself first, you are caring for your family. Here are some quick tips for implementing self-care:

  • Learn to say “yes” to yourself
Give yourself permission to prioritise your own needs and desires. Say “yes” to the things that bring you joy and fulfilment.
  • Schedule in some “me time”
Add a “date” with yourself to your calendar and protect it. Whether it’s getting a massage, taking a bath, or just reading a good book – these sacred moments are a way to invest in what you value as an individual amidst the many other roles you play.
  • Don’t be afraid to reach out
Sometimes, you just need to admit you can’t accomplish everything on your own. Delegate and ask for help. Accept help when offered. This may result in a few extra prized moments to focus on yourself.
  • Eat well and stay hydrated
Make sure you are fuelling your body with nutritious food to help you feel your best. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help keep your energy level up and body functioning properly.
  • Practice self-compassion
Be kind to yourself and remind yourself that it’s okay to not have everything under control all the time, to make mistakes and have bad days.
  • Treat yourself
Indulge in something that makes you happy, whether it’s a favourite food, a new piece of clothing, or a night out with friends.
  • Take a nap
If you’re feeling tired or overwhelmed, try taking a short nap to help recharge your biological batteries and improve your mood. You will feel more energized and refreshed after.
  • Set boundaries
Learn to say “no” to commitments that don’t align with your priorities or values, and make sure to set boundaries around your time and energy.
  • Find a creative outlet
Engage in a hobby or creative pursuit that allows you to unwind and express yourself, such as painting, writing, or knitting.
  • Stay active
Even if you don’t have time to hit the gym, find ways to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. It could be as simple as taking a walk.

It’s essential that you prioritise your own happiness and well-being by practicing self-care. Schedule time for things that bring you joy and make you feel refreshed and energized regularly, even if it’s just a few minutes a day. Remember, taking care of yourself is not selfish; your own well-being will shape the well-being of your family.
