On 30 January, YTL PowerSeraya, a subsidiary of YTL Power International, together with TNB Power Generation (TNB Genco), a subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Berhad have joined forces through a new electricity trading agreement, to import and export 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity between Malaysia and Singapore via the newly upgraded interconnector. For the first time, electricity from Malaysia will be commercially supplied to Singapore, marking a crucial step towards the success of the ASEAN Power Grid.

This agreement was officially made at an exchange of documents ceremony and was witnessed by Minister of International Trade & Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Singapore’s Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry Dr. Tan See Leng. The Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) has awarded YTL PowerSeraya the electricity importer license for Malaysia for a two-year trial after a competitive Request For Proposal (RFP) process in October 2021. YTL PowerSeraya will purchase the electricity from TNB Pasir Gudang Energy, a subsidiary of TNB Power Generation.

The CEO of YTL PowerSeraya, Mr. John Ng, stated that this partnership is a step towards a strong ASEAN Power Grid, where electricity imports will eventually form a key part of Singapore’s energy mix. YTL PowerSeraya has prior experience in cross-border power trade and financial settlements, having supplied electricity to TNB in Malaysia in 2011 and 2013. This partnership between Singapore and Malaysia is an important step towards a more secure and diverse energy future for the region.
