Every time I think of procrastination, I’m reminded of this quote – “Procrastination is like a credit card: it’s a lot of fun until you get the bill.” It is a common problem that can have a negative impact on our lives, affecting our productivity, our relationships, and even our health. While it may be difficult to break the habit, there are several tactics you can use to avoid putting things off and start getting things done.

But before we dive into a few strategies to combat procrastination, it’s important to understand why we procrastinate. Some common reasons for procrastination include fear of failure, lack of motivation, or difficulty breaking down a large task into manageable steps. By recognising the underlying causes of your procrastination, you can take small steps to address them and eventually, overcome the habit. Here are a few strategies to help you out:

1. Set specific, achievable goals for yourself

Rather than trying to tackle a large, overwhelming task, try breaking it down into smaller and more manageable goals. This can make the task seem less daunting and make it easier to get started.

2. Create a plan of action

This can help you stay organized and focused on what needs to be done. Begin by making a list of all the tasks you need to complete. Then, prioritise the tasks based on their importance and deadline. This will help you create your designated ‘focus time’ and avoid getting bogged down with less important tasks.

3. Remove distractions

Ah yes, the culprit to establishing a good workflow. This step can be as simple as turning off your phone or closing your email while you work. By eliminating distractions, you can focus your attention on the task at hand and avoid getting sidetracked.

4. Be realistic about your goals and expectations

Don’t expect to accomplish everything at once, you’re not a robot. Instead, set realistic goals and give yourself enough time to complete each task. This will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed and reduce the likelihood of procrastination.

It’s time to break the cycle and take control of your time. With a little effort and determination, you’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish and how much more productive you can be.
