Welcome to our Transformation 2.0 Town Hall Round-Up!

The month of May ended with our quarterly Transformation 2.0 Town Hall where our leaders presented us with important updates on the Yes 5G plans, projects, OKRs, Culture Initiatives, and many more! If you missed it, or want a recap, you can read all about it in our Town Hall Round-Up below!

Yuan kicked off the latest town hall by reaffirming the purpose of our Transformation 2.0 plan — to be the No. 1 construction company in Malaysia! We aspire to be the first in quality, training, safety and delivery. As we are in the second year of our Transformation 2.0 journey without any immediately tangible results, we may have lost a little bit of momentum. But, let’s remind ourselves that there is a vast amount of work going on behind the scenes to bring the best to you. Getting to the halfway point is not as easy as it seems. As we continue to dedicate our time to our projects, let’s not lose sight of our goal to be No. 1 in Malaysia.

Looking at the numbers today, our revenue position is within the top three and our profitability within the top two of the construction industry, on par with the best in the market.

We have a long-term strategic partnership with SEA, the owner of Shopee and the biggest technology group in Southeast Asia. Together, we have just been awarded the Digital Bank Licence, which will allow us to bring new digital services to Shopee users. This is a shift for the YTL Group, enabling us to leverage on our strengths in telecommunications, technology and education.

Recently, YES was the first telecommunications company in Malaysia to launch 5G. As the country is going through inflation, YTL’s vision for 5G is to

bring the cost of internet connectivity down for each individual and every family. With this in mind, YES has launched new plans with 100% unlimited 5G and 4G. Visit YES website for more 5G perks!

We are also building a data centre park and have invested in 1,600 acres in Kulai. At the same time, we will build a solar park to power these data centres.

For our Gemas-JB project, we are currently focused on completing it. Right now is a critical time but we will ensure the project is completed on time.

As for the MRT3 project, we are going to bid for it. The MRT3 is a RM30 billion project opportunity split into five packages; one being a Project Management Consultant (PMC) package, and the others the four main work packages – CMC 1, 2, 3 (Civil Works and System Works).

We are looking to contribute our expertise in any of these works or the various work packages. We are also looking at tendering for a big piece of land in Kwasa Damansara. Additionally, we are tendering in the industrial sector.

The ongoing projects in the UK – Brabazon and YTL Arena – are being managed by us in KL. Brabazon is a residential development project, while YTL Arena is a 17,000-capacity indoor arena which will be the third largest-arena in the UK when completed.

Technology Update

Good news! We have integrated both SPYTL and SIPP-YTL users. You are highly encouraged to start communicating in Microsoft Teams and utilise the application to the fullest, as Teams offers many powerful tools for us to communicate and collaborate.

Innovation Update

Well done to the HSE Department for achieving their 100% target  in both March and April 2022! We also applaud the Planning Department for achieving their OKR targets in March 2022. The OKR framework has been an incredibly useful indicator in tracking our progress of collaboratively transforming each department on this Transformation 2.0 journey. Ultimately, the goals set by each department are setting us on the right track to become the No. 1 construction company in Malaysia!

The next section describes our company’s ongoing project updates. On top of infrastructure projects, we have also started to look at the other sectors for diversification purposes. We are going into the industrial sector, undertaking projects like warehouses and data centres.

For the Bukit Raja Warehouse, as of April 2022, we achieved 18.56% of work progress as opposed to our target to achieve 19.77%. The piling work will be completed by early June.

Terrific news! We are very proud to win this three-storey warehouse project with Ally Logistic Property (ALP), the largest warehousing infrastructure developer in Taiwan. We are going to construct this warehouse entirely. The warehouse will have Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) to enhance efficiency. The OMega warehouse is situated right next to the Bukit Raja Warehouse, which is our first warehouse project that is still ongoing.

Concurrently, we are building towers to support our 5G roll-out not just in urban centres, but in the rural areas which are harder to access. What’s more challenging but also exciting, we are building towers on islands!

As for Data Centre updates, we have signed the deal with GDS, a leading developer that operates high-performance data centres in China. The piling work commenced on 27 May at the YTL Green Data Centre Park in Johor. On top of that, we are building a huge solar farm to power our data centres. A new team has also been hired to look at data centres in more detail.

Talent Update

Many exciting initiatives and programmes are coming your way! We are working to build an environment that is conducive for you to thrive in!

YES officially launched 5G on 26 May! YES is the first to go 5G, just as it was the first to go 4G. As pioneers in pushing technology in different fields, we want our people to be the first to experience whatever we are offering. All YTL Construction employees were given 5G SIMs and phones at the beginning of the year, and this benefit is also applicable to new joiners! We urge everyone to look at the new plans as they are the most affordable uncapped 5G offerings globally. So, what are you waiting for? Go to the YES website now for more information!

In April 2022, the YTL Learning Academy conducted a roadshow so that everyone could learn to navigate Boss i-Net with ease, as well as take an English test. The test results will be a good indicator of the level of English fluency in our company. Don’t worry if you did not score above the passing mark. We will provide training for those who did not obtain a certain level.

If you would like to enrol for soft-skills courses, there are still two available at this time – ‘Thinking Outside the Box, Problem Solving & Decision-Making Skills’ and ‘Effective Coaching Skills & Methodology for Management’. Head to  Boss i-Net to apply!

This is part of the appraisal system that we are revamping for our YTL Construction Family. It will be a completely transparent system that rewards high performance. We are committed to creating a system that cultivates long-term, on-going conversation. We would also like to empower the Line Managers to take more charge of  your colleagues. To do this, we need to roll out the system, update the technology, and provide training for all the managers to be effective communicators.

As we expand with more projects, there are more opportunities for recruitment! Spread the word and you will be rewarded if your referral is successful! To find out more, please contact HR at [email protected].

It’s time to talk about our Employee of the Quarter Award initiative. We want to recognise and appreciate the individuals that go Above and Beyond! Help us by sending in nominations so that each deserving person can win the Employee of the Quarter worth RM200! Let’s start appreciating one other in our company!

Scan the QR Code for the nomination form. We are sure you have many great stories to tell about your colleagues who have gone Above and Beyond in our Transformation effort, and who exemplify our core values.

We ended our recent town hall with new additions to the Wall of Fame, which celebrates staff who have worked over 20 years in the company. This is a testament to the hard work, consistency, commitment and loyalty of those who have grown with our company. They are the bedrock and experts of our organisation – we couldn’t have applauded or appreciated them more. We added an additional 67 names to the list. In total, we have 183 people who have worked with the company for over 20 years!
