Sea turtles are highly threatened the world over, and despite rigorous conservation regulations and policies, their numbers continue to plummet. There is every reason to get involved in saving endangered sea turtles:

  • Sea turtles encourage ecotourism in coastal areas, providing job opportunities and boosting incomes for the local communities whilst raising public awareness of the importance of sea turtle conservation.
  • Sea turtles play an important role in ocean ecosystems by maintaining healthy seagrass beds and coral reefs, providing key habitats for other marine life, and helping to balance marine food webs.

Did you know that the gender of the sea turtles is determined by the temperature surrounding the eggs when they are incubating?

In conjunction with World Sea Turtle Day, you might find the webinar by YTL Construction of interest – Go Green Series in August 2021, presented by Ms. Seh Ling, Principal Officer from Lang Tengah Turtle Watch Project (LTTW). She shared interesting facts on the different species of turtles, their mating and nesting habits, threats to their existence and what we can do to help these species survive and thrive.

YTL Hotels’ Conservation Initiatives

Over the years, YTL Hotels has been putting resources into conservation efforts to preserve the population of sea turtles, through turtle rescue and also through the construction of hatcheries to save turtle eggs from being sold for human consumption.

Gaya Island Resort Marine Centre (GIRMC)

  • 21 turtles rescued, nine released and two injured turtles treated under the rehabilitation programme by GIRMC since 2015

Tanjong Jara Resort x Lang Tengah Turtle Watch

  • 73,394 eggs saved from 739 nests since FY2015
  • 44,999 hatchlings released into the sea
  • A new hatchery was set up in June 2021 to expand turtle egg recovery efforts
