One of the largest global movements for nature is happening in less than a month! Yes, Earth Hour 2022 is taking place on 26 March 2022 at 8.30pm. Traditionally, participants around the world will switch lights off for an hour to raise awareness on climate change. It brings millions of people from over 190 countries together and has been a driving force for major legislative change.

Although Earth Hour was meant to raise awareness about climate change, there is another critical threat to the planet that demands our immediate attention – rapid biodiversity loss.

2022 is a crucial year for nature and biodiversity, as world leaders come together to attend the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity 15th Conference of the Parties (UN CBD COP 15). The biggest expected outcome for this conference is the formation of an international treaty – similar to the Paris Agreement, but to reverse nature and biodiversity loss, which is why Earth Hour 2022 is the time for people to apply pressure on world leaders to take action on this critical issue.

Speaking of biodiversity, World Wildlife Day (WWD) falls on 3 March 2022 – the international day of celebrating and raising awareness on wild flora and fauna. This year’s WWD focuses on “recovering key species for ecosystem restoration”, which has a similar shadow to Earth Hour 2022’s focus.

YTL Group has long been championing biodiversity protection and conservation through various projects, including YTL Cement’s Kanthan Biodiversity Initiatives, Gaya Island Resort Marine Centre’s conservation initiatives, as well as YTL Jawa Timur’s Greenery Programme at Randutatah Mangrove and Sea Pines Conservation Area.

The Kanthan Trapdoor Spider (Liphistius kanthan) is currently listed by IUCN as a critically endangered species inhabiting Kanthan Cave.
Gaya Island Resort Marine Centre runs turtle rescue and coral reef conservation, as well as facilitating educational programmes for hotel guests and employees.
Over 176,000 of trees have been planted along a 55km coastline of Randutatah Mangrove and Sea Pines Conservation Area.
