A Brief History of Plastic

Single use plastic (SUP) is a hazard to the environment. However, did you know that plastic was ironically first created to benefit the environment? The first plastic was invented by John Wesley Hyatt in the late 19th century to imitate ivory, during a time when the growing popularity of billiards had put pressure on the natural ivory supply. Plastic became a cheaper and more readily available substitute.

Plastic has been so deeply woven into our lives due to its durability, malleability, and waterproof plus lightweight properties. However, humans grew to rely on SUP, which were designed to be disposed of after single use. Despite the long-term detrimental effects of SUP, we tend to overlook them for the convenience they provide.

Malaysia Plastics Sustainability Roadmap 2021-2030

The Ministry of Environment and Water released the Malaysia Plastics Sustainability Roadmap 2021-2030 in late 2021, which highlights strategies and action plans to steer the country towards a sustainable plastic economy.

The Roadmap emphasises a circular economy for plastics. This means redesigning plastic products to be reused and repaired instead of becoming waste at the end of their life cycle. This cradle-to-cradle approach ensures that more problematic plastics are phased out upfront and that unavoidable plastic waste is minimised.

The key strategies adopted in this Roadmap are:

Phase-Out

Unnecessary plastic products should be phased out, with simultaneous development of eco-friendly but functionally similar products, without compromising quality and efficiency.

Reuse

Reusable packaging should be implemented for products where communities collectively achieve a zero waste lifestyle.

Material Circulation

Plastic waste is to be properly collected, sorted, and processed into recycled resin.
Initiatives such as the Reverse Vending Machine and Deposit Return Scheme are used to greatly increase the plastic collected-for-recycling rate.

How does YTL Group play its part?

The Roadmap suggests companies adopt and implement sustainability initiatives and policies. Here at YTL Group, we are working hard towards eliminating SUP through our Say No to All Plastic (SNAP) campaign. If you would like to know more about this initiative, do check out the SNAP Guideline. Our ongoing efforts include:

Replacing avoidable SUP with environmentally friendly alternatives across business units.

Driving behavioural change through employee engagement and communication.

Involving ourselves in the Plastic Disclosure Project (PDP) training programme to evaluate our plastic footprint and strategic approach to tackle the issues.

How can YOU play your part?

Refuse unnecessary plastic packaging

The easiest way to reduce your plastic waste is to not use it in the first place!

Bring your own reusable container/bag for takeaways

This alone can save on disposable packaging, especially when it comes to hawker food.

Invest in a thermal/reusable cup

If you are a frequent coffee or bubble tea drinker, bringing your own cup makes a whole lot of difference.
