Geo Alam Environmental, a waste management solutions provider, is a subsidiary of YTL Cement. In this article, we would like to introduce GeoAlam and talk about what it does.

Geo Alam is in the business of providing sustainable waste management solutions to businesses, enabling a circular economy. It helps industries transition from the traditional take-make-waste model towards a circular cradle-to-cradle one. This is achieved by applying the proven technology of co-processing, the use of waste as alternative raw materials or alternative fuel to replace natural mineral resources and fossil fuels in industrial processes, such as cement production.

Retailers and manufacturers are provided with a zero-landfill solution that protects their brand. Trade returns and production rejects, which cannot be recycled in their original state, are processed by Geo Alam into materials suitable for use as alternative fuel. This not only avoids the waste from going into landfills, but is able to replace non-renewable energy sources.

For industrial customers, Geo Alam is able to provide a sustainable and safe solution to the management of scheduled waste. In Malaysia, companies are required to treat industrial wastewater before releasing it into soil or inland water. The impurities during the treatment process usually go into landfills. However, Geo Alam is now able to help these companies manage such waste by co-processing and reusing it in cement production.

To create awareness and change mindsets on more sustainable waste management practices, Geo Alam has been actively running educational programmes to disseminate technical knowledge among manufacturers in Malaysia and the general public. Earlier this year, it collaborated with theDepartment of Environment to hold technical seminars on industrial effluent treatment system operation.

Geo Alam is constantly looking for new ways to grow and to add value to the country’s waste management problem. It is now exploring ways to help Malaysia achieve a zero-waste future by offering alternative and innovative solutions. Among ideas that it is pursuing is the repurposing of non-recyclable plastics to make building materials and decorative items. Although still at its infancy, we are all very excited regarding its prospects and we look forward to further developments.

For the past 5 years, Geo Alam contributed to the achievement of:

  • Land Area Conserved : about 205,095 m2 of landfill (equivalent to 82 Olympic sized pools)
  • Greenhouse Gas Emission Prevented : 85,794 ton CO2e
  • Resource Recovery: Saved 338,903,907 kg of natural resources and 24,800,642 liters of diesel
